Gary Plaag, the lead coach at Couragio Consulting, has been providing presentation skills training and coaching to professionals in the public, not-for-profit and for-profit business environments in the United States, Canada, and Europe since 1991. His background includes a 19-year career as an information technology manager, as well as a Bachelor's Degree from the College of William and Mary and a Master's Degree in Communication from George Mason University. He frequently serves as an adjunct professor teaching business and professional communication as well as public speaking in the Department of Communication at George Mason University.
Gary is an active speaker and presenter, often facilitating meetings, emceeing professional and community events, and presenting keynote addresses at conventions and corporate gatherings. He is an active singer and stage performer and frequently coaches musical performing groups on their stage presence, presentation and audience engagement skills. He is a certified presentation judge in the Barbershop Harmony Society where he adjudicates competitions and provides constructive feedback to the performers, who range in age from teenagers to senior adults.
Gary has served in various leadership positions of numerous organizations including Leadership Fairfax, Inc., the Mid-Atlantic District of the Barbershop Harmony Society, and Business Network International (BNI). He continues to serve as a mentor and coach to participants in the Emerging Leaders Institute of Leadership Fairfax, Inc. Gary is a perpetual student who believes that in order to be a good teacher and coach one must be actively engaged in the act of learning on a regular basis.
Gary employs an encouraging, constructive, challenging and fun coaching and teaching style that strives to maintain the self-confidence and self-esteem of those receiving feedback, while leading those being coached to develop and hone their presentation and performance skills, taking them to new levels. Gary's extensive business leadership and stage performance background allows him to share a wealth of experience with his clients…always striving to help the speaker, presenter or performer to develop exciting and effective performance skills within the individual performer's established style and personality. Gary is also an anxiety-reduction specialist, successfully helping clients to reduce performance anxiety which allows them to confidently and freely share their ideas and information with the audience.
